On Sept. 2, Dones went hiking on the Eagle Creek Trail in the Columbia River Gorge near Portland, Ore. While on the hike, a forest fire broke out. Dones helped gather a group of hikers who were stranded on the trail with the fire separating them from their way back. Approximately 150 hikers were led to safety aided by Dones. Tech. Sgt. Rob Dones was simply out for a four-mile hike when a giant plume of smoke from a raging forest fire turned a casual date into a 22-plus hour rescue of more than 140 people.
