All of AMC's diesel-powered vehicles are capable of using bio-diesel fuel, and approximately 33 percent of the general-purpose fleet can run on alternative fuels.
Mobility Airmen developed a more precise cargo loading process that frees hundreds of sorties to be used on other airlift, air drop and aeromedical evacuation missions.
New routes mark a new era of efficiency for mobility aircraft flying around the world to help those in need. For example, in summer 2011 a KC-135 from Fairchild Air Force Base, Wash., flew over the North Pole for the first time on a new route to Manas Air Base, Kyrgyzstan.
Mobility Air Forces use Mission Index Flying to determine the most efficient routes to take. MIF software allows aircrews to adjust their flight profile in real-time, saving up to 1.25-1.5 percent in fuel.
Aircraft auxiliary power units are utilized to perform preflight checks on an aircraft before engine startup, reducing wear and tear on the aircraft's auxiliary power unit and also saving fuel.
In the interest of energy security, AMC is helping to reduce dependence on foreign sources by preparing for the use of alternative aviation fuels. Variants of C-17s, C-5s, KC-135s and C-130s are fully certified for unrestricted operations using a synthetic blend of JP-8. A C-17 Globemaster III, similar to the aircraft shown here, flew a test mission Aug. 27, 2010, using jet fuel blended with a combination of JP-8, biofuel and synthetic fuel.
The Fuel Efficiency Office changed policy to reduce
Regular washing can make aircaft engines run cleaner and cooler, saving on fuel consumption and maintenance costs. Currently, C-17s and KC-10s receive regular engine washes, and AMC is looking into expanding this to other aircraft.
