Due to the low frequency of missions completing international missions from/to Schengen airspaces, there is not a permanent presence of Italian Border Police and Customs Agents in the terminal. Prior coordination via ITAF would be necessary to get the applicable officers out who are able to conduct immigration and customs controls for any passengers departing or entering the Schengen region and therefore Space-A travel out of this region is not advertised (Including to the United States)
Bordnuller Patrol for travel outside the Schengen region // “Space-A travel to/from Aviano AB (LIPA) is restricted to flights to/from Schengen countries”
The Space-Available program is currently available to all passengers that fall within the categories as stated in the Department of Defense Instruction 4515.13, Air Transportation Eligibility.
On April 22, 2022, a memorandum was released that reinstated the full use of the Space-Available travel program and lifted all limitations due to Covid-19.
All eligible Space-A passengers are still required to comply with the travel requirements stated in the DoD Force Health Protection Guidance and the Foreign Clearance Guide.
Roll calls are conducted at the Air Mobility Command ticket counter 2 hours 20 minutes prior to departure. Due to medical screening, it is recommended that passengers arrive approximately one hour prior to roll call time, in order to ensure time for processing.

Background to the FCG:
- Installation Access Requests // “Due to security reasons, on and off Aviano AB access is restricted to personnel on official duty”
Aviano AB is an Italian Military Base with its own access rules and procedures.
• All DoD Active Duty and Civilians unless PCSing to Aviano Air Base or stationed in the Italian Territory MUST submit an Installation Access Request (IAR) 30 Days prior to the visit start date.
• All other Aviano AB visitors, personnel not assigned to Aviano who do not have an escort/sponsor, MUST complete an Installation Access Request form (IAR) 3 to 4 weeks prior to visit. Email31sfs.lvis.orgbox@us.af.mil or 31sfs.vcc.vcc@us.af.mil to request and submit the IAR.
Note: All IAR’s must be sponsored by a Commander stationed at Aviano. The SFS Commander signs for retirees and unaffiliated visitors when they walk-in/contact LVIS or the VCC, and the OSS Commander normally signs for unaffiliated aircrew.
ETP: There is currently an Exemption to Policy that allows individuals who intend to stay on base for NO longer than 2 days and 1 night are allowed to without an IAR (intent was for transient aircraft/aircrew). Therefore to abide by Host Nation regulations, space-a travels must find accommodations in the local economy and should travel with their leave orders and leave addresses showing Italy as a destination.
