Welcome to the NSA Souda Bay Passenger Terminal

The Naval Support Activity Souda Bay is located on the north-west coast of the Greek Island of Crete by the village of Mouzouras, approximately 10 miles (17 kilometers) east of the city of Chania.

Welcome to the cradle of European Civilization, the island of Crete. Some will be visiting for the first time, while others have now become regulars, but either way, you will experience a truly memorable Mediterranean travelling experience. Whether your visit is for relaxation or to explore and discover the many well-known treasures of Crete, you will not be disappointed by the diversity of the landscape-the rugged mountains, the endless beaches and the turquoise seas, the many cities, towns and villages, and stunning countryside.

Upon arrival, unaffiliated passengers must ensure to visit directly the VCC (Visitor Control Center) to request installation access. You are not permitted to access any other base facility unless you have obtained base access permission.

Before traveling, it is important to know that installation facilities are restricted to certain categories of Space-A passengers. Recommend you check with installation facility to check services offered.

The Passenger Terminal staff wish to make your military air travel a pleasant and memorable experience. If you should have any questions or encounter any issues during your travel, please feel free to contact our qualified passenger service representatives and they will work closely with you and help you with all your travel needs and look forward to assisting you in future travels.

Installation Access

The NSA Souda Bay installation is located and hosted on a Greek Air Force base and requires that base access be granted through the Visitor Control Center (VCC). You will not be able to get onto the installation without approved base access and must have a legitimate reason to access the base. The VCC handles all base access requests.

For this reason, it is essential to present a DoD ID/USID and proof of Space-A travel, specifically a digital or hard copy of your Space-A registration at the Visitor Control Center (VCC) during normal operating hours, so that base access can be arranged for you. VCC is open 0800 to 1500, Monday through Friday, (except American and Greek holidays) and is located outside the installation's main gate.

If you will be arriving after hours when the VCC is closed, wait time at the main gate may be lengthy. Once you arrive at the Greek main gate, request from the Greek Security to contact the US Navy Security Forces personnel. Again, it is essential to present a DoD ID/USID and proof of Space-A travel, specifically a digital or hard copy of your Space-A registration and you’ll be provided with a temporary base access until VCC opens.

TERMINAL/LOCAL TRAVEL INFORMATION

Typical flight destinations                                                                                                              AMC operates a scheduled Patriot Express from/to NSA Souda Bay to/from Norfolk NS, VA once every two weeks.

The Navy and other services operate from our station with no regularly scheduled flights to Europe and continental U.S. (CONUS), but travelers are reminded flights are mission-driven and frequency of flights/destinations do change.

Patriot Express Travelers                                                                                                                Patriot Express (PE) missions currently operate every other week.

Travelers must not use show times provided by their booking agency. Please advise Passenger Service for check-in times.

Booking for duty passengers on travel orders and PCS passengers accompanying pets, must be arranged through NAVPTO/Local Transportation Office.

Check-in counters for booked passengers on travel orders, open 8 hours prior to departure. All members are required to have a copy of their travel orders, ID cards, passports, all checked baggage, pets with kennels, and carry-on items. Space Available Travel Helpful Tips                                                                                            Roll calls for Space Available passengers are conducted 3 hours prior to departure.

Active-duty members need to be within their chargeable leave dates in order to sign-up. We will need to see a copy of your leave paperwork and any other necessary documents.

Dependents will need to present a copy of their Space-Available travel letter.

All passengers competing for a seat must be marked present within 24 hours prior to a Space-A roll call. To mark yourself "present" you need to arrive at the terminal with all travel documents, including your travel party, and proceed to the passenger service desk and they will mark you present. Once marked present you'll be added to the present list and included to the Space-A roll call.

On your intended departure date, you must be travel ready prior to roll call, car parked, travel party and baggage corralled.

Selection is based upon your travel category and the date and time of your sign up.

Per DODI 4515.13, Section 4, Paragraph 4.1.a., Reservations: There is no guarantee of transportation and reservations will not be accepted or made for any space-available traveler. The DoD is not obligated to continue an individual’s travel or return the individual to the point of origin or any other point. Travelers should have sufficient personal funds to pay for commercial transportation, lodging, and other expenses if space-available transportation is not available. All associated expenses are the responsibility of the traveler.

Checked Baggage Allowance                                                                                              Passengers are authorized 2 pieces of checked baggage not to exceed 70 pounds each (140 pounds total) and 62 linear inches (the sum of the length plus the width plus the height). Single items exceeding 70 pounds and/or 62 linear inches will be counted as 2 pieces and, therefore, fulfil the allowance for a passenger. Each passenger is permitted to hand-carry one article (e.g., small luggage, garment bag, backpack) and 1 personal item (eg., cosmetic case, purse, briefcase) for storage in the cabin area. Carry-on baggage must fit under the seat and may not exceed 45 linear inches (length plus width plus height). In addition, infant car seats and fold up type strollers do not count against the passenger's normal baggage allowance and must be checked at the check-in counter prior to entering at the secured gated area. Baggage weight may be further limited due to type of aircraft or other restrictions.

Passenger Terminal Amenities                                                                                                    Limited amenities are currently offered at the NSA Souda Bay Passenger Terminal due to the small size and configuration of the passenger terminal.

Travel Attire                                                                                                                                Please be advised, while traveling on flights, appropriate dress and appearance must be followed. Open-toed/open-heeled shoes, narrow based high heels, sandals, and flip flops are prohibited on military aircraft. Patriot Express flights have no footwear restrictions.

Unattended Baggage                                                                                                                  Please do not leave baggage unattended in and around the terminal, or it will be properly disposed of. If you notice any unattended bag in the terminal, please notify a Passenger Service Agent. Baggage storage lockers are not available at the terminal.
