The Airman & Family Readiness Center here was recently recognized as the Air Mobility Command Family Child Care Program of the Year for 2012.

Pamela Schumaker, family child care coordinator said the A&FRC has been working hard to improve youth functions on base, and this award directly reflects what they have achieved.

"All of us here have been working hard to make sure all of our programs are operating at their maximum potential," said Schumaker.

The major contributing factor for winning this award is the Family Child Care Resource Center, added Schumaker. The center assists with in-home caretakers by allowing them to rent out supplies necessary for starting a new child care business.

Currently, Grand Forks Air Force Base has four child care providers who are certified to care for up to six children at a time.

"The providers on this base are amazing, they are the ones willing to give their time and open their homes to nurture and care for children," said Schumaker.

The A&FRC also helps new parents see what is available to them, whether it be programs or information support.

Expecting parents here are treated to a course called Great Expectations, which not only briefs new parents on what to expect with a child, but teaches parents infant and child CPR.

Another program that has gained momentum is the free PCS (permanent change of station) child care service. Sponsored by the Air Force Aid Society, this program offers 20 free hours of child care for Airmen leaving or arriving at a new base.

"I think this award is a great honor, not just for us but everyone and every agency that helped us get to where we are now," said Schumaker.

Editor's note: The A&FRC is dedicated to supporting service members and their dependants meet their family and personal needs by providing a diverse range of programs and services, such as child care and parenting. For more information, call the A&FRC at 701-747-3241.
