Men and women in uniform are not the only ones who assist with the Armed Forces' mission. There are countless efforts made by the service member's spouse and family who guard the homefront.

President Barack Obama proclaimed May 11, 2012, as Military Spouse Appreciation Day, stating, "On Military Spouses Appreciation Day, we recognize the important role our military families play in keeping our Armed Forces strong and our country safe."

In honor of this day, McConnell held a wing spouse appreciation event Aug. 24 for active duty spouses. Approximately 200 members participated in the event.

Members from base private organizations, local businesses, the Friends of McConnell and other volunteers contributed time and effort to make this event possible for the 22nd ARW spouses.

"It is important to thank the spouses of military members because of the sacrifices they also experience," said Lt. Col. Kevin Rainey, 22nd ARW Inspector General, and the active duty event coordinator.

Squadrons opened their doors for social functions aimed at entertaining spouses and family members. Additionally, they were able to visit their spouses work areas.

"I appreciate the organizations supporting the spouses and their family," said Don Salgado, 22nd Medical Support Squadron spouse, "Active duty military go through a lot and with them comes their family."

After the social functions, spouses congregated at the Robert J. Dole Community Center Ballroom for the evening ceremony. Activities included a free dinner, games, prizes and award recognitions.

The 2011 McConnell Spouse awards were given to spouses who dedicated themselves to the Key Spouse program and demonstrated leadership and involvement. The Key Spouse program is composed of military spouses who provide a link between squadrons, the Airman & Family Readiness Center, base events and programs for other spouses.

Awards were given to group Key Spouses and nominees of the Air Force Association Joan Orr Spouse of the Year Award. The Joan Orr award is given to non-military spouses of Airmen who have significantly contributed to the Air Force through their base involvement, spouse involvement and volunteering.

Amanda Chastain, 22nd Civil Engineer Squadron spouse, was awarded the 22nd ARW Joan Orr Spouse of the Year. Earlier this year, Chastain also received the 2011 Joan Orr Air Force Spouse of the Year.

"Its good to see everyone dressed up interacting with each other," said Courtney Hisey, 22nd CES Key Spouse, "meeting new people and getting to know each other. It is easier to get through this journey when you have a friend to take with you,"

She recommends, "get out of your comfort zone, get involved, and get a battle buddy."

McConnell members used this day, ceremony and events to thank military spouses and highlight their distinct service to the Armed Forces.
