Air power at FOB Farah

FARAH, AFGHANISTAN --  A U.S. Air Force C-17 "Globemaster III" made a special appearance May 10 at Forward Operating Base Farah to transport mission essential tactical vehicles.

Members of Provincial Reconstruction Team Farah prepared two Mine Resistant Ambush Protected All Terrain Vehicles for transfer into the aircraft. The vehicles will be used by other units in Afghanistan.

U.S. Army Capt. Terell Jones is responsible for managing logistic support for Provincial Reconstruction Team Farah.

"Each M-ATV weighs approximately 25,000 pounds and flying them is a fast way to get them where they are needed," said Jones. "These were excess vehicles so we are giving them to another unit so they can use them."

U.S. Air Force Maj. Wes Skenfield, stationed at Joint Base Lewis-Mcchord, Wash.,  was the aircraft commander for this mission.

"The interesting part of this was landing on the semi-prepared field, which is a dirt runway, and just getting all the coordination pieces together to make that happen," said Skenfield. "It all came together really well, and actually the conditions were better than I expected."

"It has been a really long time since a C-17 landed here, but the mission was a success as a result of the coordination between the different services," said Jones.
