A suspicious package was received by mail carriers Aug. 31 at approximately 9:30 a.m. whereupon two U.S. postal workers and one servicemember experienced rash-like symptoms after handling the package. They were immediately sent to Memorial Hospital and have since been released.

Thirteen other personnel were decontaminated on site as a precautionary measure, and one other person later self-identified and went through the decontamination process.

Emergency responders were immediately dispatched and are still on scene. Officials are still working to isolate and confirm details of the suspicious material, and are working with local law officials.

The official mail center and adjacent buildings have been evacuated. There is no immediate threat to surrounding communities.

Military retirees, the public, and area businesses have been asked to re-schedule their visits to Scott AFB.

Further details will be released as they become available. Media may direct questions to 375th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs at (618) 256-4241 or 256-4206.
