The 87th Civil Engineer Squadron's Emergency Management Flight here won the 2010 Air Force Emergency Management Flight of the Year award for the third time since 2002.

"It's extremely humbling to be selected for this award," said Mr. Steve Robertson, 87th CES emergency management director. "I think we've been selected based on the strength of our team. They are extremely focused on what's important and doing the right things for the right reasons."

No longer being a single branch installation, the team has needed to adjust their practices and procedures to fit the joint base environment.

"It was a huge challenge, but with the help and guidance of all the different mission partners, our team has worked very hard explaining to the other units the different programs we run to get them up to speed," said Mr. Robertson.

The programs being conducted and initiated on Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst are not only being adapted by other flights at the Air Mobility Command level, but across the Air Force as well.

"We, in a way, lead the charge in many initiatives that are implemented here," said Tech. Sgt. Tom Longworth, 87th CES Emergency Management Operations NCO in charge. "We provide input to other flights around the Air Force and they see what programs we do here that would fit their program."

The EM flight, facts show, provides emergency management education materials and briefings to military and family members on JB MDL. They coordinate and integrate all activities to build, sustain and improve the installation's ability to mitigate against, prepare for, respond to, and recover from threatened or actual natural disasters, acts of terrorism or other man-made disasters.
