McChord office wins 2010 AMC Civilian Personnel Program of the Year

MCCHORD FIELD, JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. --  The 62nd Airlift Wing Civilian Personnel Office has won 2010 Air Mobility Command Civilian Personnel Program of the Year.

"About 18 months ago, this office went through a change in leadership," said Norman Fernaays, Civilian Personnel Office officer. "But we put together a strong program that meets the needs of employees, supervisors and commanders."

After those 18 months of hard work and reorganizing the office, the team was shocked to hear they won an AMC award.

"We had no idea about the award until I received the e-mail," said Mr. Fernaays. "We certainly didn't expect it, but we are very honored to receive it."

During fiscal year 2010, the civilian personnel team successfully conducted more than 900 performance appraisals, 28 retirements, 20 unemployment claims and 21 incentive awards.

"Every year, the office handles the same affairs," said Ed McKenzie, Civilian Personnel Office labor relations officer. "But this year, we completed them in a very timely and efficient manner."

The office also successfully negotiated a new Collective Bargaining Agreement with the local union. The union represents the employees who work on McChord Field.

"We've spent the last 18 months renegotiating with the union," said Mr. McKenzie. "It took some work, but paid off in the end. The civilian employees now have a contract that benefits them the most."

AMC noted the office Best Civilian Personnel support to base. The office was also voted one of the highest trust levels by employees.

"We make it a point to emphasize good communication," said Mr. Fernaays. "Any time new policies or agreements come out, we're sure to inform employees and commanders. It's important to have easy, clear communication."

The term "Team McChord" is not only referring to Airmen, but civilians as well. Without their support, McChord Field's mission would not be complete.

"Our civilians are a key component of the total force it takes for us to deliver global airlift for America," said Col. Rick Moore, 62nd Airlift Wing vice commander. "While our Airmen are conducting overseas contingency operations and humanitarian relief airlift, our civilians are ensuring our mission at home continues to be a seamless success. I am extremely proud of our civilian personnel office. Their award is a true testament to their hard work and dedication, and I am proud to serve with them."
