Continuing an annual tradition that began in 2009, the Airmen of the 349th Air Refueling Squadron donated more than $750 for school supplies to the seven "littles" from the Kansas Big Brothers Big Sisters chapter.

The donations were provided to littles of elementary school age, who were qualified by Big Brothers Big Sister program managers as being in need.

"Most of these kids have very little school supplies, so having these supplies available is a great way to boost their confidence in order to help them get the education they need," said Mark Eby, Big Brother Big Sisters executive director.

The littles who were selected, were brought to McConnell on the pretense that they were participating in a base tour.

"It was a surprise for the kids because they didn't know they were going to receive this money," said 1st Lt. Ronald Barnhart, 349th ARS training director. "They thought they were just getting a base tour."

In addition to the money raised by the 349th ARS, community retailers from Derby, Kan., also contributed to the school supply donations.

The littles were presented the money at the 349th ARS, who currently has seven official "bigs." Col. Jamie Crowhurst, 22nd Air Refueling Wing, was also present at the event.

The gift was appreciated by the littles, especially 12-year-old Kristy Arnett.

"Receiving this money made me really happy, it will definitely allow me to get the supplies I need, "she said.

The event helped to reemphasize the relationship McConnell maintains with the community.

"This event is just another way that McConnell stays connected to the local community," said Lieutenant Barnhart. "It also allows us to mentor these kids and share with them the same things we benefit from."

McConnell has partnered with the local Big Brothers Big Sisters for more than 30 years and is one of Kansas' largest contributors and was recognized as one of Wichita's leading supporters as a top five supporter nationally.
