New Expeditionary Combat Support System coming to Scott

Over the next few years, the way Air Force logisticians do their job will change dramatically through the Expeditionary Combat Support System.

ECSS, based off industry-proven tools from the best commercial practices, will help manage logistics resources like equipment, people and funds. With this, the way Air Force logistics are performed will change at every base.

Currently, the process of scheduling a base-level repair means setting a repair date without the ability to ensure the necessary equipment and manpower is available Air Force wide. With ECSS, a global view of available people and parts can be used to get the job done faster and more efficiently. Overall, ECSS will replace the outdated paper-tracking method many logistics information systems depend on.

While it will be several years before ECSS reaches full operational capability and its benefits are fully realized, the implementation process is currently underway here and the beginning stages will affect Team Scott logisticians very soon. ECSS will be fielded throughout the Air Force with Scott slated to receive the program in 2012. To ensure a smooth transition, Scott AFB leaders and ECSS users met July 21 for an informational briefing about the program, its goals, program timelines and how the Air Force will be affected.

As is often the case, the changes will not be easy as long-standing ways of doing business will either dramatically change or completely disappear. To help logisticians navigate these changes, education and training programs will be implemented for those using the new system.

ECSS will drive changes in the way the Air Force does business and the way logisticians perform their jobs. The result will be an Air Force enterprise better enabled to provide its warfighters the right materiel at the right time. ECSS will also enable logisticians to use their time more productively, significantly reducing the cost of accomplishing the Air Force Logistics mission.
