The work of the MacDill Anti Terrorism Unit can easily go unnoticed, which is a good thing considering the objective is to make sure every day is routine and uneventful. Air Mobility Command has taken notice, however, recently awarding the MacDill unit with the Best Anti Terrorism Program - Fixed Installation honors.

The nomination packages vividly reflected the sustained and concerted efforts being made to deter and protect against terrorism and made the decision extremely difficult. MacDill will now compete at the US Transportation Command (USTC) level to determine the USTC nomination to DoD.

Rudy Wyatt, installation and anti terrorism officer at MacDill, said the award was welcomed, but really belongs to the base collectively.

"What we do is not an 'I' event, but a 'we,' effort," said Mr. Wyatt. "The collective effort of the tenants here (at MacDill) and the visitors it what makes us effective."

Mr. Wyatt notes that MacDill is unique due to the commands here, as well as the high profile it keeps as a destination for dignitaries and military officials.

"Not every base gets visited by the president, vice president and the secretary of defense," he said. "We also get a lot of foreign dignitaries and high level visitors on a daily basis."

That makes the job of securing the base against attack a bigger job -- one Mr. Wyatt said is only possible through good cooperation and communication. He encourages anyone who sees or suspects a security threat to notify Security Forces or unit leadership to ensure the unthinkable attack never crosses over into the realm of reality.

Runner up for the AMC award was the anti terrorism unit at the 436th Airlift Wing, Dover Air Force Base, Delaware.
