McChord Field Airmen Stand Down Published May 11, 2010 By Abner Guzman 62nd AW/PA JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, WASH. -- The 62nd Airlift Wing particpated in an Air Mobility Command "Wingman Stand Down" May 10 to call attention to the recent rise in Air Force suicides, the tragic loss of Airmen to private motor vehicle accidents, and to reenergize the Wingman concept as the foundation approach to suicide prevention and unit safety. The event was specifically and personally designed to "stand up" for the command's most valuable asset -- its Airmen. Gen. Raymond E. Johns Jr., AMC commander, directed the stand down of AMC units in support of the Chief of Staff of the Air Force's announcement of a "Wingman Stand Down." "Through dynamic group discussions, enhanced by an interactive video, we will reemphasize the importance of awareness, accountability, communication, and team building," General Johns said in a memorandum to all AMC Airmen. "This will not be a day of lectures, but rather an opportunity for you to discover new ways to reverse this deadly trend. Please know each of you possess an essential piece to the solution - a solution that is not dependent on rank or position. That said, it is our hope that by giving you this time you may discover new ways to look after each other, and perhaps, even save a life." See slideshow.
