Air Mobility Command recently captured two significant Air Force-level safety awards, including the Secretary of the Air Force Safety Award (Category I) and the Col. Will L. Tubbs Memorial Award (Category I).

Following the Air Force announcement, Gen. Raymond E. Johns Jr., commander of Air Mobility Command, conveyed his gratitude to those who contributed to the Air Force Safety awards.

"Being selected for such a prestigious Air Force level award speaks volumes about the command's commitment to safety and highlights the personal and professional involvement of supervisors and leaders at all levels," General Johns said in a message to AMC commanders and staff directors. "Most importantly, these accolades are a direct reflection of how well you safely accomplish the mission and take care of your people. Congratulations and thanks for all you do every day to make safety a priority - Well done!"

For the Secretary of the Air Force Safety Award (Category I), Air Force safety officials cited AMC's mishap prevention program and Fiscal 2009 winter safety campaign. In an Air Force-wide message, Air Force officials said AMC's mishap prevention program "produced outstanding results in a number of areas." Officials also said the command's winter safety campaign "focused on results, culminating in the first zero fatality winter period in seven years and producing the lowest Class A mishap rate for like periods in AMC history."

AMC's best practices, and strengths in key safety programs that led to outstanding world class initiatives, were key to the command winning the Col. Will L. Tubbs Memorial Award (Category I), according to Air Force officials. They said the "excellent use of trend analysis to identify command high interest areas and extensive oversight of mishap reports served as a benchmark for all MAJCOMs, greatly enhancing their traffic safety programs."

The Air Force chief of safety, Maj. Gen. Frederick Roggero, added that the Air Force has many safety achievements to be proud of in 2009, including the safest year ever in aviation safety. "The Air Force nuclear surety program was strengthened through functional-expert visits to field units, publication of the Nuclear Surety Bulletin and by providing deficiency analysis through quarterly Dull Sword reports. Explosive Site safety planning improved significantly throughout the Air Force resulting in more than 950 sites approved in FY 2009."
