Senior Airman Justin Diggins is a hydraulic mechanic with the 315th Maintenance Squadron at Charleston AFB. His career field involves inspections, troubleshooting, testing and replacement of hydraulic components. Since the earthquake in Haiti, Airman Diggins has seen an increased work load in his daily responsibilities in maintaining C-17 hydraulic components, and said he and his entire work center is glad to be supportive and helpful in a time of need for others. Shirley Poue works a busy schedule as a supervisor and telephone operator with the 628th Communications Squadron at Charleston AFB. As a base operator, her foremost duties are to guide and direct outside callers as well as those from within Charleston AFB. She also supervises six others. Since the disaster in Haiti, Mrs. Poue has been taking an dramatic increase in phone calls from the public, the media and other bases inquiring on what they can do to help with the crisis. The New York City native supports Charleston's mission every day and said it feels great to be a part of it "because we connect loved ones with military personnel all over the world." Pearl Smalls is a housekeeper with the Inns of Charleston here. As a housekeeper her daily duties include cleaning rooms and accommodating customers, as well as making sure customers have everything they need. Since the disaster in Haiti, Mrs. Smalls has had an increase in her workload because of the influx of aircrews from across the Air Force staying in the base billeting. According to officials with the 628th Force Support Squadron, the Inns of Charleston is the busiest lodging operation in Air Mobility Command. Airman 1st Class Alyssa Pruitt is a food services apprentice with the 628th Force Support Squadron. Her daily responsibilities include performing food deliveries as well performing monthly inspections. Since the earthquake in Haiti, Airman Pruitt's workload has increased due to more inbound and out bound aircraft producing heavier volumes of meal requests for their long flights to Haiti. Tech. Sgt. Benjamin McClain is an aeromedical evacuation technician with the 315th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron. His primary duties are to provide in flight patient care and to respond to in-flight emergencies. Since the earthquake in Haiti, Sergeant McClain has been put on alert status for missions to Hiaiti. Tech. Sgt. Michael Ellard is the superintendent for the base command post with the 628th Air Base Wing. His primary duties are to implement policies, support management objectives that enable Charleston AFB to complete its mission, as well as manage training, career development, morale, fitness and mobility readiness. Since the earthquake, Sergeant Ellard stated that command post duties have increased by 50 percent, placing an extra workload on he and his Airmen. Sergeant Ellard stated that supporting the Haiti mission is very rewarding and gives him a great sense of accomplishment to see how what he is doing directly affects the mission. His daily duties involve loading and unloading aircraft with supplies for aircrews and passengers, as well as servicing aircraft lavatories and galley equipment. Since the earthquake in Haiti, Airman Mayhew's workload has increased due to heavy air traffic in and out of Charleston AFB. Airman Mayhew has worked diligently to provide enough supplies to help aircrew members get back and forth.
