Scott Air Force Base, in cooperation with the Military Child Education Coalition, is offering parent workshops here Nov. 3. The workshops will be held at the Global Reach Planning Center, Building 1907.

During the workshops, instructors will provide in-depth training and tools to help parents navigate the challenges of effectively transitioning students from one school district to another.

The parent workshops at Scott AFB are just one example of an increased effort this year to highlight the many successful Air Force family programs already in place and to inform Airman and their families of the development of new programs. The year-long focus on Air Force families, held July 2009 through July 2010, has been designated "Year of the Air Force Family."

According to AMC officials, throughout the year AMC organizations are asked to examine existing family services and look for ways to evolve and expand them to meet the changing needs and expectations of Airmen, their families, and the larger Air Force family.

"As the commander of Air Mobility Command, one of my top priorities is focused firmly on our most important resource, our Airmen and their families," General Lichte said. "With that in mind, I want to ensure our Airmen, as well as our civilian employees, are offered the opportunity to attend an important event focused on military parents and their children."

For this reason, the AMC commander has authorized for the Headquarters, AMC staff, subject to mission requirements, Airmen who are interested to attend the workshop and to invite their spouses. Additionally, civilian employees who are interested may be given an excused absence to attend, and contractor personnel are free to attend as long as their absence from the workplace is permitted by their employer and does not add expense to the government or interfere with their contract duties.

"This workshop is important to our military families, and our families need to know it is important to us," General Lichte added. "As a 38-year Air Force veteran, and as a father, I understand how important it is that our military parents be armed with the tools to best advocate for their children during military transitions."

The Military Child Education Coalition program includes three workshops:

For parents of children in Kindergarten through 12th grade, the Coalition offers a workshop titled, "Transitions: What Every Parent Should Know," from 9 a.m. to noon or from 6 to 9 p.m.

For parents of children 5 years old and younger, the Coalition offers a session titled, "Preparing for the Journey: Give Your Kids a head Start on the Road to Academic Success," from 1:30 to 3 p.m.
