Everyone around Scott AFB knew the Snowbirds were in town by the red planes that flew overhead Sept. 19 and 20.

The Canadian Forces Snowbirds, from Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada, were here for Scott's Airpower Over the Midwest Airshow.

"We are a demonstration team that travels North America showing our skills, professionalism and teamwork," said Snowbirds No. 4 Capt. Marco Rusconi, First Line Astern pilot. "We represent the men and women wearing uniform in Canada who fight side-by-side with American troops in Iraq and Afghanistan and at home."

They fly a nine-jet formation performing some of the most difficult and intricate precision manuevers.

"My favorite maneuver is the mirror roll," said the captain. "Numbers 8 and 9 fly just feet from each other and it really shows our hard work."

He said they train from November through April, each flying two to three times a day, five days a week. Then they perform May through October. The Snowbirds also travel with 11 maintainers who keep the planes running.

"I love the feeling of people watching and interacting with the crowds," said the Victoria, British Columbia, native. "It gives me pride. Their support and excitement is why I joined. I also hope that I can teach them to work hard and stick to their dreams."

After all, being a Snowbird pilot is Captain Rusconi's dream.  "I remember seeing them when I was 7 years old and I said, 'that's what I want to do,'" he added.

Besides the airshow, the Snowbirds also took in the scenes of the local area.

"It is a treat for us to be here," said Captain Rusconi. "For some of us, this is our first time in the Illinois and Missouri area, and we got a sneak peak of the Arch. I'm excited to go see it during our time off."

The Snowbirds left Sept. 21 for their next show in Sidney, Australia.
