SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- U.S. Air Force Academy cadets recently briefed AMC leaders on ways the command might be able to use renewable energy sources and save fuel. The cadets were asked by AMC to find ways to make the KC-135 Stratotanker more fuel efficient. Cadets 1st Class Daniel Prescott and Joel Hapert focused on winglets, wing tips and wing extensions to not just save fuel, but to save money and increase the life of the fleet, as well. In a different study, other cadets used Travis AFB as their case study for renewable resources being used on AMC installations. Cadets 1st Class Kimberly Hale, Kyle Rainwaters, Matt King and Bryan Rocco each focused on a specific resource, including solar, wind, biofuel and nuclear power. Lt. Gen. Vern Findley, AMC vice commander, said he was very impressed with the cadets and their presentation. “This has been very productive. This is all great stuff,” he said. “Your work will have lasting benefits as we continue to explore alternate energy sources throughout the command. We need to capture this information so future cadets can continue to build on what you have started.”
