AF, Army team to resolve information technology issue Published May 15, 2007 Air Mobility Command Public Affairs Scott Air Force Base, Ill. -- Air Mobility Command contracts with commercial carriers to compliment its organic airlift fleet. As part of the contracting process, AMC communicated with commercial partners by granting them limited access to DoD military networks. As Defense department network security requirements became more and more stringent, such access was no longer feasible. However, rather than trying to develop a unique solution, AMC's Directorate of Communications looked to whether another U.S. Transportation Command component shared the issue. "We found that the Army's Surface Deployment and Distribution Command had a similar need to communicate with commercial trucking firms," said Robert Kruchten, AMC communications technical director. "More importantly, SDDC had devised a way to do this via a .gov Web site, which avoided giving the commercial trucking firms direct access to DoD networks." AMC and SDDC collaborated, enabling AMC's use of the SDDC solution. Mr. Kruchten said this teaming resulted in better security for DoD networks and lowered cost by reusing a proven solution. "This solution has already had very positive feedback from AMC's commercial partners," he added.
