GRAND FORKS AIR FORCE BASE, N.D. -- John Gorman, outdoor recreation director, recently received the 2006 Boating Program and Instructor of the Year award from the North Dakota Game and Fish Board.

Mr. Gorman taught 31 boating classes in 2006. He has been volunteering for the program for six years, and he has reached many students throughout the years.

"In 2006, North Dakota had 11 boating accidents and zero fatalities," said Nancy Bolt from the North Dakota Game and Fish Board.

Mr. Gorman is responsible for more than seven outdoor adventure programs, including ski trips, ice fishing and cross country skiing in the winter and canoe trips, Warrior of the North bike race, kids fishing derby, equipment rental, horse stables and campgrounds.

He is knowledgeable on boating and hunting safety and hosts courses throughout the year. The next hunting safety course is April 1 in Emerado, N.D. Boating safety courses will begin in boating season.
