Not only did Chief Master Sgt. Brye McMillon celebrate his 25th year in the Air Force April 6, but he was also recently assigned as the 18th Air Force’s new command chief.

Chief McMillon began his Air Force career in April 1981 after graduating from high school.

“After I graduated high school, I moved from Alabama to New York with my sister and began working full time,” said Chief McMillon. “As a child, I grew up in a disciplined household. After moving away from my family, I decided that I wasn’t ready for life without regiment.”

That’s when Chief McMillon decided to join the U.S. Air Force.

Upon graduation from Basic Military Training, Chief McMillon entered the workforce as a security police trainee.

As a young noncommissioned officer and security police troop, Chief McMillon was afforded the opportunity to attend and graduate from the Army Ranger School.

Throughout his career, Chief McMillon’s background has included various security forces duties, manpower and resources positions as well as and two previous assignments as a command chief master sergeant.

“Throughout the span of my career, I have had numerous opportunities. My proudest achievements, however, were graduating from the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy, my promotion to chief master sergeant, marrying my beautiful wife Marie, and the birth of my son, Brye Jr.,” said the chief.

While taking on the responsibilities of the command chief master sergeant for 18th Air Force, Chief McMillon serves as an advisor to his commander on health issues, welfare and morale of more than 42,600 enlisted personnel.

Chief McMillon’s role in the 18th Air Force includes the command’s 12 wings, two expeditionary mobility task forces, the Tanker Airlift Control Center and three stand-alone groups.

“My most important job as a senior enlisted leader is to take care of people,” said the chief. “My ultimate goal before I leave here is to say that when a person came to me with a question, I always had an answer or knew where to find it. If I could not find an answer, I want to at least be able to say I gave it my 100 percent effort.”

As Chief McMillon continues to further his transition into the 18th Air Force command chief position, he wants to leave his enlisted force with one final thought:

“The key to a successful mission is to take care of your people, each other, and oneself,” he said. “For those of you who don’t think what you do is important, remember that what we do here everyday is a key role in continuing the freedom of our nation.”
