AMC commander awards GWOT Service Medal Published March 3, 2005 SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- The men and women of Air Mobility Command are once again being recognized for their service. Gen. John W. Handy, commander of AMC and U.S. Transportation Command, has approved the award of the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal to active-duty personnel assigned to AMC.This is a well-deserved honor for everyone who supported the Global War on Terrorism, directly or indirectly, said General Handy. No matter if its on the ground or in the air, AMC Airmen are consistently meeting the needs of combatant theater commanders, and this recognition reflects their unwavering service-before-self approach to the mission.According to Executive Order 13289, the President of the United States has directed all active-duty AMC personnel, to include numbered Air Forces, wings, direct reporting units, independent groups, and members of headquarters AMC who were assigned, attached or mobilized to units providing support, including indirect support, to operations Noble Eagle, Enduring Freedom or Iraqi Freedom from Sept. 11, 2001, to the present be awarded the medal.The medal is also awarded to personnel assigned to Airport Security Operations from Sept. 27, 2001, to May 31, 2002, from the Continental United States or outside CONUS for at least 30 consecutive days or 60 nonconsecutive days.According to Col. Michelle D. Johnson, AMC director of personnel, the GWOT-S medal does not prevent personnel from receiving other deployment decorations that offer distinction for those who served or are serving in the Area of Responsibility.The AMC Personnel Directorate will work with base military personnel flights to do a mass update for members of qualifying organizations.
