AMC commander announces retirement Published March 18, 2005 SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, ILL. -- Gen. John W. Handy, the commander of U.S. Transportation Command and Air Mobility Command, is slated to retire Oct. 1, according to AMC officials.General Handy will retire with nearly 39 years of service to the Air Force. The general took command of AMC in November 2001. He is a command pilot with more than 5,000 hours in aircraft including the C-130, C-141, C-17, C-7A, C-9, C-37 and KC-10.A change of command date will be announced at a later date, and the general's replacement has not been named.
