AMC names 2004 Fire Protection award winners

The 2004 Air Mobility Command Fire Protection of the Year award winners were announced April 14. The winners are:

Military Fire Officer of the Year: Tech. Sgt. Richard Galtieri of the 92nd Civil Engineer Squadron, Fairchild AFB, Wash. Sergeant Galtieri distinguished himself by providing emergency medical services to a 3-year-old child with an impaled object in the airway. The sergeant's quick and decisive actions stabilized and readied the patient for transport, thus preventing further injury.

Civilian Fire Officer of the Year: Donald Striejewske of the 436th CES, Dover AFB, Del. Mr. Striejewske distinguished himself as the fire department incident commander on an A-10 engine fire. Through his leadership, crews extinguished the fire and their actions limited loss to $1.6 million.

Military Firefighter of the Year: Airman 1st Class Amber Dodrill of the 305th CES, McGuire AFB, N.J. Airman Dodrill distinguished herself by flawlessly extinguishing a fire in military family housing. Her efforts directly led to fire extinguishment and prevented the spread of fire throughout the $1.4 million structure.

Civilian Firefighter of the Year: Michael Teer of the 22nd CES, McConnell AFB, Kan. Mr. Teer distinguished himself as a firefighter during an auxiliary power unit fire on a KC-135. His quick and decisive actions led to extinguishment of the fire, ensured the evacuation of the aircrew, and kept damage to the $54 million aircraft to a minimum.

Firefighter Heroism of the Year Award: Bradford Voorhees of the 22nd CES, McConnell AFB. Mr. Voorhees distinguished himself during a motor vehicle accident resulting in eight injured victims. His poise and confident actions directly contributed to the survival of all eight passengers. After properly accessing the scene, he quickly entered the vehicle and systematically triaged each patient, to ensure the most critical were treated first.

Military Fire Officer of the Year, runner-up: Tech. Sgt. Robert Baldrate of the 437th CES, Charleston AFB, S.C. Sergeant Baldrate distinguished himself during a fire in military family housing. He directed his crews through fire extinguishment and isolated leaking gas lines. His actions saved the military family housing unit valued at $150,000.

Civilian Fire Officer of the Year, runner-up: Carlos Soto of the 305th CES, McGuire AFB. Mr. Soto distinguished himself during a hazardous material response as the fire department on-scene commander. His direct leadership actions resulted in a chlorine spill being alleviated with no injuries or environmental impact.

Military Firefighter of the Year, runner-up: Senior Airman Anthony Tungol of the 437th CES, Charleston AFB. Airman Tungol distinguished himself during a motor vehicle accident involving victims with extreme blunt force trauma. He treated patients' lacerations and contusions and helped to prevent the onset of life threatening shock.

Civilian Firefighter of the Year, runner-up: Jason Satcher of the 92nd CES, Fairchild AFB. Mr. Satcher distinguished himself by providing emergency medical services to a drug overdose victim in military family housing. His actions ensured an open airway and adequate amounts of oxygen were administered, thus positively influencing patient recovery.

The AMC winners will now compete for the Air Force-level Fire Protection awards.
