AMC commander captures Laureate Award

  • Published
Gen. John W. Handy, commander of U.S. Transportation Command and Air Mobility Command, was awarded the Government/Military Laureate Award April 5, for the U.S. Air Forces Aeromedical Evacuation System.

The award is presented annually by Aviation Week and Space Technology magazine to honor individuals and teams who make lasting contributions to the advancement of aerospace, and to those who applied aviation and space technologies to the betterment of humankind, according to Joe DAndrea, the magazine's marketing manager.

He said the editors of Aviation Week and Space Technology select Laureate winners from eight categories, including Aeronautics/Propulsion, Commercial Air Transport, Electronics, Government/Military, Operations, Space, Innovation/Entrepreneurship, and Business/General Aviation.

The AE system was selected because it is considered to be a major factor in increasing the survival rate of war-injured military members to 90 percent. Since October 2001, the system has been used in more than 1,300 missions.

The AE system can operate as far forward as fixed-wing aircraft are able to operate to conduct air and land operations and has the flexibility to be used during humanitarian and disaster relief operations, small-scale contingencies, major theater wars, and military support to civilian authorities.

AE can significantly improve casualty recovery rates by providing timely and effective transportation of the sick and wounded to medical facilities offering appropriate levels of care.

The Air Force AE system provides a critical patient movement capability that cuts across traditional service lines. A majority of AE patients generated during contingency operations have come from Army and Marine Corps ground combat units. Therefore, it is important that the AE system integrate well with the medical components of all U.S. forces and our allies.
