Travis maintenance groups take top honor

  • Published
The 60th and 349th Maintenance Groups here captured the coveted Air Force Clements McMullen Memorial Daedalian Weapon System Maintenance Trophy naming them the Best in the Air Force.

The Daedalian Trophy is awarded annually to the best maintenance group in the Air Force with more than 1,000 people assigned. The team is evaluated on their integration of maintenance with the total wing mission.

The award tops off an amazing year for Travis AFB; a year in which Travis maintainers pushed airlift on an unprecedented global scale, from home station as well as 54 deployed locations; a year in which Best in Air Mobility Command became the norm when describing C-5 and KC-10 departure reliability rates, delayed discrepancy rates and air abort rates.

The level of excellence the Travis Team demonstrates every day was recognized by the Daedalian Team, said Brig. Gen. Thomas Gisler Jr., 349th Air Mobility Wing commander. This is a validation that Travis Airmen are performing at an outstanding level in accomplishing the mission and serving this great nation.

After being finalists for the award for several years, and after months of preparation, their goal finally came to fruition.

This is an absolutely amazing accomplishment, said Col. Keith Frede, 60th Maintenance Group commander. Words alone cannot describe how proud I am of the men and women in this organization. To be named as the best in the Air Force is the ultimate prize for every maintainer on this base. Its something weve all known at heart, now the Air Force knows it as well.

This award not only highlighted the maintenance groups accomplishments, but Team Travis as a whole.

None of this could have happened without the support of every organization on this base, said Colonel Frede. We cant repair aircraft without parts, we cant launch a mission without pilots, and we cant maintain our facilities without civil engineers.

The 60th AMW commander, Col. Lyn Sherlock, echoed those sentiments.

Winning the Air Force Daedalian trophy is a true testament to the contributions of all mobility warriors in the Global War on Terror," said Colonel Sherlock. "Congratulations to the Airmen, NCOs, officers, civilians and contractors throughout our Total Force Travis Team for continuing to demand excellence in the face of high operations tempo and innovation when timelines and budgets are short.

A group of Travis maintainers will travel to Washington, D.C., to officially accept the award on behalf of the Travis Team. Additionally, the fourth floor, corridor A of the Pentagon will be dedicated to the men and women of the 60th and 349th Maintenance Groups.
