AMC commander's holiday safety message Published Nov. 24, 2004 SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- The holiday season is traditionally a period where we give thanks for the many blessings bestowed upon us, the most precious of which is the freedom to share these moments with loved ones and friends. As we celebrate the holiday season, take time to remember those fallen in battle and honor our brothers and sisters in arms who are downrange and in harms way ensuring our freedom at home and around the world. At the same time, we must not forget the families of our deployed members. For those of us with the opportunity to spend the holidays with family and friends, we must be mindful of a significant danger facing us each day -- driving our private motor vehicle. Motor vehicle accidents claimed the lives of 61 Airmen in fiscal year 2004 -- 10 from Air Mobility Command. Sadly, this is not a new danger. Rather, it is a constant fact that has been with us long before the events of Sept. 11, 2001.Whether you are going across town or across country, you will encounter an element of risk. Personal risk management can help reduce your mishap potential and safeguard loved ones, friends and coworkers from needless injuries. We know that alcohol, fatigue, and driving too fast for conditions increase the risk of having a traffic mishap. Therefore, refraining from drinking and driving, planning your drive to allow for frequent breaks and rest periods to avoid fatigue, and adjusting your speed to road and traffic conditions, are all examples of good risk management.I encourage you to take the time to discuss your holiday plans with your supervisor to ensure you have identified all the risks associated with your activities. We need each of you back healthy and ready to continue in the defense of our great nation. Have a safe and happy holiday season.
