Civilian guards augment Fairchild security forces Published Oct. 8, 2004 FAIRCHILD AIR FORCE BASE, Wash. -- Fairchild recently added a new dimension to its security forces. Starting Oct. 4, Department of Defense civilian guards will be manning base gates here. According to 92nd Security Forces Squadron officials, the civilian guards will augment Fairchild security forces for the next year during increased deployment commitments. Master Sgt. Hollis Severns, of the 92nd SFS, said the civilian guards are trained and empowered to provide the same services active-duty security forces provide at the gates. Sergeant Severns said the new civilian security force -- most of whom have either recently retired from the security forces career field or spent time in the Air Force at some point -- will be providing a much needed boost to Fairchild's active-duty security forces. He also said the civilian guards will be performing gate security duties, including checking identification and searching vehicles, and adding an additional layer of force protection. While the blue and black uniforms may look different, Sergeant Severns said the base populace will see no reduction in force protection or commitment to personal safety and the safety of the installation.
