  • Published
More than 160 industry leaders from around the country gathered here Sept. 1 and 2 for the fourth annual Industry Day, sponsored by Air Mobility Command and the Air Force Association.

Industry Day 2004 provided a forum through which AMC representatives shared information on the commands strategic roadmap with commercial and academic leaders.

Our goal is to provide our industry reps with the opportunity to see what AMCs near and mid-term requirements are so that they can work their strategic plans, then in turn give us what our warfighter needs, said Lt. Col. David Sprague, AMC Systems Requirements Division chief and coordinator for this years event.

The forum attracted a wide spectrum of industry, with more than 70 companies represented. This years Industry Day set an attendance record when the 160 seats were reserved a month prior to the event.

Industry Day topics covered several aspects of modernization and future technology concepts, all in the hopes of matching commercial industrys technology and products to AMCs needs.

One highlight was the AMC senior leadership panel held on Sept. 2. Maj. Gen. Paul J. Essex, AMC director of plans and programs; Maj. Gen Mark A. Volcheff, AMC director of operations; Brig. Gen. Loren M. Reno, AMC director of logistics; and Brig. Gen. Paul J. Selva, commander, Tanker Airlift Control Center, participated.

The panel fielded questions attendees submitted during the Industry Day registration process. Topics addressed included the status of the C-130J, the role of the Civil Reserve Air Fleet and its overall value in the Department of Defense, intratheater airlift burdens, and how airlift and tanker modernization needs have changed since Sept. 11, 2001.

We looked at [the questions] ahead of time to see if we could pre-coordinate briefings that would meet those needs, said Colonel Sprague. We have the question and answer panel for the industry leaders so they can hear viewpoints directly from the decision makers in AMC.

General Volcheff concluded the panel session with a series of questions to the attendees about what considerations should be taken into account with development of new technologies. He asked questions about optimizing transportation, enhancing communication, increasing fuel efficiency, and standardizing procedures across weapon systems.

Through the Industry Day panels, AMC hopes to encourage the development of effective, affordable products that are ready to support the AMC mission when needed.

The overall goal is the same, year in and year out to refresh industrys vision of AMC, said Colonel Sprague.

The colonel said an important part of Industry Day is to create a team which can work together to deliver what the military needs both in the air and in the foxhole.
