Col. April Vogel assumed command of the 6th Air Mobility Wing from Col. Daniel Tulley during a change of command ceremony July 8, at MacDill Air Force Base, Florida.

Vogel, previously a member of the Air National Guard, is the first guardsman to command the 6th AMW. She comes to MacDill from Maryland where she served as the vice commander of the 175th Wing, Maryland Air National Guard.

"I can’t begin to express my excitement to work with team MacDill,” said Vogel. “I am both honored and humbled by the chance to work with such a dynamic community. In support of more than 30 mission partners and in conjunction with the remarkable city of Tampa, every day Team MacDill makes direct contributions to the fight, and being a part of that is not an honor that I take lightly. I’m proud to serve as your wing commander, and I’m committed to continuing the tradition of excellence that you all uphold every day.”

During her tenure as the 6th AMW commander, Vogel will be on Title 10 orders, meaning she will serve in an active-duty capacity like the Airmen she will lead. She has command experience at the squadron, group and wing levels, and is a command pilot with more than 1,300 flying hours in a variety of aircraft.

Lt. Gen. Samuel D. Cox, 18th Air Force commander, presided over the ceremony.

“In the mobility Air Forces, we’ve led the way in how to integrate the total force with active, guard and reserve,” said Cox. “What we care about as we go through this process is that the most precious resource we have, which are the Airman…, have the best leader possible, and that’s Colonel April Vogel. She will do magic here, and there’s no doubt in my mind.”

In his remarks, Tulley expressed his gratitude to the men and women of Team MacDill. He highlighted accomplishments of the 6th AMW, both of the combatant commands, and all of the tenant units here at MacDill AFB.

“Thank you,” said Tulley. “It’s been absolutely humbling to serve with each and every one of you whether you’re in uniform or not.”

Tulley, whose next assignment will be at the Pentagon, said he was honored to be a part of such a great military community.
