Officials offer tips for moving during peak season Published Aug. 5, 2011 By Samantha Crane 375th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- The U.S. military is expected to facilitate nearly 50,000 permanent station changes during this year's peak moving season. Several factors may be causing moving delays this year, such as a shortage of private sector drivers as well as an increase in private sector moves and recent relocations due to base realignment and closure mandates. While some delays cannot be avoided, others can. Each Airman can do their part to make their move as seamless as possible. Many of these avoidable delays stem from servicemembers not turning in a copy of their orders to their local personal property processing offices in time. It is recommended that the individual do so as soon as they have orders. Other ways to facilitate the moving process include: · Provide both primary and alternate move dates · Provide valid e-mail addresses and phone numbers that you can be reached at throughout the move · Consider moving outside the peak summer season · Remember to obtain and keep numbers and points of contact from the transportation service provider conducting your move · Contact PPPO immediately if your provider doesn't initiate contact within 10 days of primary pack and pick up dates or if they don't arrive on the projected moving day Servicemembers can also consider performing a personally procured move. This option allows members to control their own move dates and avoid delays during the period between arrival at a new duty station and reception of personal property. Members are also reimbursed 95 percent of the cost of a government move. To finish a move, customers should complete a customer satisfaction survey, which impacts the quality rating of transportation service providers. Surveys arrive via e-mail seven to 30 days after the shipment is delivered. They can also be accessed through www.move.mil or by calling (800) 462-2176.
