Little Rock NCO maintains C-130 hydaulics in Kandahar

Staff Sgt. Riaaz Hosein is an aircraft hydraulic systems craftsman assigned to the 451st Expeditionary Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan.

Sergeant Hosein is deployed from the Air Mobility Command's 19th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, 19th Airlift Wing, at Little Rock Air Force Base, Ark.

At his deployed location, Sergeant Hosein supports aircraft hydraulics maintenance for the C-130 Hercules which flies airlift missions in the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility for Operation Enduring Freedom.

According to his official Air Force job description, aircraft hydraulic systems Airmen troubleshoot, remove, repair, overhaul, inspect and install aircraft hydraulic systems and components and related support equipment.

Aircraft hydraulic systems Airmen like Sergeant Hosein also advise on problems maintaining aircraft hydraulic systems and support equipment and determine maintenance procedures and performance characteristics using technical publications, the job description states. They also diagnose malfunctions and recommend corrective action.

Sergeant Hosein is also trained to inspect aircraft hydraulic systems, components and support equipment and performs system operational checks. He also is trained to store, handle, use and disposes of hazardous material and waste according to environmental standards.

To do his job at both home station and while deployed, Sergeant Hosein has to maintain mandatory job knowledge in many areas. They include knowledge on hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical and mechanical principles applying to aircraft and support equipment, hydraulic systems, concepts and applications of maintenance directives, using and interpreting schematics, wiring diagrams and technical publications, and proper handling, use and disposal of hazardous waste and materials.

The 451st EAMXS is a sub-unit of the 451st Air Expeditionary Wing. According to the 451st Air Expeditionary Wing Web site, the wing provides a "persistent and powerful airpower" presence in the Afghanistan area of operations. 451st AEW Airmen provide "world-class" tactical airlift, close air support, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, command and control, airborne datalink, combat search and rescue, casualty evacuation and aeromedical evacuation capabilities whenever and wherever needed.
