At the U.S. Air Force Expeditionary Center at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, N.J., Tech. Sgt. Sean Scavetta serves as one of nearly a hundred Airmen from 30 different Air Force specialties who work as contingency skills instructors preparing Airmen for deployment.

Now, the career services craftsman is deployed as the unit deployment manager and lead marketing specialist for the 380th Expeditionary Force Support Squadron at a non-disclosed base in Southwest Asia.

"Deploying is a good way for someone in a training position like I am to stay aware of what's going on in the deployed areas," Sergeant Scavetta said. "While here, I've also had to use the flexibility in operations I've learned from the Expeditionary Center training as well as other areas in my career to complete my deployed job."

At the Expeditionary Center in the 421st Combat Training Squadron, he teaches Airmen the basics in subjects such as security forces-style tactics, military operations in urban terrain, and mounted and dismounted patrols. While deployed, the technical sergeant said he has not just UDM and marketing duties as his main job but also several additional duties.

"My job as the UDM is to manage the force support squadron's mobility program," Sergeant Scavetta said. "A couple of key responsibilities are working with logistics personnel to ensure troops are manifested on aircraft from our location, keeping leadership aware of in-bound personnel, and maintaining the readiness of squadron Airmen. I'm also a resource advisor, the NCO in charge of Armed Forces Entertainment visits and a unit fitness program monitor."

For the month of April, Sergeant Scavetta earned the 380th Air Expeditionary Wing's NCO of the Month honors. While he may not discuss receiving the award specifically, by earning it demonstrates why having services Airmen in the deployed areas is important.

"Our career field is extremely important to the deployed environment," Sergeant Scavetta said. "I say this because we provide the quality of life services and morale activities that sustain deployed personnel in a high operations tempo environment. Everybody needs an outlet to unwind, whether it's recreation events through our Chapman Activities Center or maintaining their fitness goals at our cardio and fitness sprungs, or simply getting a bite to eat from our dining facilities. We understand what we bring to the fight and that's providing top-notch customer service that regenerates Airmen -- helping them contribute to the mission."

A native of Yigo, Guam, Sergeant Scavetta said he's learned to adapt to new environments his entire life and the last nine years in the Air Force has been no different. He said he's proud to serve in the military and whether it means training Airmen for deployed duties in New Jersey or managing services operations in Southwest Asia, he'll continue to do his best.

"I am proud to be serving in the world's greatest Air Force, but more importantly, to be representing the island of Guam," Sergeant Scavetta said. "I plan on following in my father's footsteps and investing 20-plus years in the Air Force, as long as my family is on board.

"It has been quite some time since I have been in the force support squadron world since I have done multiple special duties in my career, including my current home station duties at the Expeditionary Center," Sergeant Scavetta added. "It still amazes me how much our customers rely on us and the importance of delivering 100 percent effort -- day in and day out. Though we may be taken for granted in-garrison, the fact remains that we deliver force sustainment through our deployed functional areas. I am proud to be a services troop and look forward to the rest of my deployment with my team. We started out as multiple teams from all around the world, but have merged as a one team that gets the job done."
