Rystad, 20, of Red Lake Falls, Minn., was killed in combat while traveling on a patrol mission near Fallujah, Iraq, after an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle Dec. 2, 2006. His childhood friend, Kurt Philion, honors Rystad’s memory by carrying a 3-foot by 5-foot American flag while running races with a T-shirt bearing an image of the soldier.
