A C-5 Galaxy from the 349th Airlift Wing, Travis Air Force Base, Calif., approaches a KC-135 Stratotanker from the 939th Air Refueling Wing over the Pacific Ocean June 15, 2006. The C-5 has a wingspan of 220 feet and is almost 250 feet long and 65 feet tall making the aircraft almost twice as big as the KC-135's 130 foot wingspan, 136 foot length and 41 foot height. Retired Marine Sergeant Carlos Evans thanks the aeromedical evacuation team during the 48th Air Mobility Command and Airlift/Tanker Association Symposium in Nashville, Tennessee, Oct. 29, 2016. In 2010, the Airmen transported Evans from Afghanistan to the U.S. on a C-17 to receive medical care after he suffered injuries from an improvised explosive device while on patrol. Evans was unconscious from the time he stepped on the IED in Afghanistan until he woke up at Walter Reed Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. During his keynote address, Everhart provided Evans his first opportunity to put faces and names to the aeromedical evacuation team who helped him.
