Tanker maintenance troops from the 319th Air Refueling Wing at Grand Forks Air Force Base, N.D., watch as a tanker from the 22nd ARW at McConnelll AFB, Kan., rolls off into the sunset for a night air-refueling mission from a non-disclosed base in Southwest Asia on Sept. 28, 2003. Tanker units from Grand Forks; McConnell; MacDill AFB, Fla; Robins AFB, Ga.; and Fairchild AFB, Wash., combined there for a short time to work together in the 340th Expeditionary Air Refueling Squadron. The 340th EARS is part of the 379th Air Expeditionary Wing. The 379th Air Expeditionary Wing transitioned from a predominantly fighter-based operation during the start of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003 to a multi-mission wing in 2011, according to its wing fact sheet. Once touted as "the largest concentration of coalition airpower in history," the wing now supports a wider range of missions to include bomber, airlift, refueling, aeromedical evacuation, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance.
