A local service member recently uncovered his relationship to the namesake of MacDill Air Force Base’s Col. Leslie MacDill, after working on his family ancestry. Army Staff Sgt. Robert McClure, currently serving with Joint Communications Support Element, traced his family tree back to MacDill’s step mother, who lived in a small Western Ohio town around the turn of the century. In 1903, McClure’s great, great grand aunt, Emma, married MacDill’s father, Edgar, most likely in Xenia, Ohio. Edgar MacDill (a Presbyterian minister in central Illinois who would have travelled to the theological seminary in Xenia) remarried after his first wife (and Colonel MacDill’s mother), Carrie Buck MacDill, passed away in 1896 in Monmouth, Illinois.
