Medal of Honor of an Air Force Giant: ALS building dedicated in honor of Chief Etchberger

The sun shines bright on the encased Medal of Honor of Chief Master Sgt. Richard L. Etchberger as it sits on display in front of the airman leadership school June 4, 2014, on Grand Forks Air Force Base, N.D. The nation’s highest military honor was posthumously awarded to Chief Etchberger on Sept. 10, 2010, in recognition of his sacrifice and heroic actions in March 1968. Etchberger's Medal of Honor is extraordinary on another count: it is the first Medal of Honor to an individual serving in the highest enlisted grade in any service. No other person in the pay grade of E-9 has been awarded the decoration while serving as a sergeant major (Army and Marine Corps), master chief petty officer (Navy), master gunnery sergeant (Marine Corps) or chief master sergeant (Air Force).
