Stories from Vietnam: Into the assassin’s den
Capt. Lt. Keith Sawyer was stationed at Tan Son Nhut Air Base in Saigon, Vietnam from 1963-64 as a forward air controller flying the L-19 (O-1A) “Bird Dog” aircraft. His mission was to mark enemy targets with smoke grenades for fighters to come in and destroy, ultimately flying 386 combat sorties and accumulating 600 flying hours that year alone.
