To the Philippines and back: Wing Commander reflects on his heritage

Joaquin Canlas, a retired U.S. Army Staff Sgt. and U.S. Air Force Col. Jimmy Canlas, 437th Airlift Wing commander’s, grandfather, was a Philippine Army scout and joined the U.S. Army to fight in World War II. During his time in the U.S. Army, he served as Gen. Douglas MacArthur’s personal driver. Canlas’ grandfather was captured and eventually escaped the Bataan Death March, where prisoners walked 65 miles to Japanese prison camps. He went on to also serve in the Korean War under MacArthur. (Courtesy photo)
