Candy Bomber meets Airman whose grandparents his Berlin airdrops saved
Senior Airman Andrea Gehde, a client systems technician from the 521st Air Mobility Operations Group, shows a photo of his grandparents, Helga and Joachim Gehde, to retired Air Force Col. Gail Halvorsen, the famed ‘candy bomber’ of the Berlin Airlift. Airman Gehde passed along his grandparents’ appreciation to Halvorsen, who helped save their lives with the relief supplies they airlifted into Berlin during Operation Vittles from 1948 to 1949.
